2019 Reading Goal

I’m setting a reading goal for 2019! My bookshelf is almost full, yet there are so many books I haven’t got around to reading yet. I think there are more books on my bookshelf I haven’t read than ones I have. I’m taking that as a sign I need to read more.

Finding time to read

I read every day without fail. I honestly don’t remember the last day I didn’t read some sort of fiction, whether it was published fiction, fan fiction or my own fiction. 2018 was a very busy year for me however, so I didn’t get through nearly as many books as I would have liked to. Most of my free time was spent writing instead of reading, which I also enjoy, but reading helps writing and I need to find more time for it.

Reading speed

I’m a very slow reader. I often see reading vlogs or blog posts about how many books someone read in a day. I will never do a 24 hour reading challenge. I’d get through half a book, if that. I’m not one to skim read either. It’s just not something I do, and I’d feel like I missed something if I did.

I like to absorb every detail when I’m reading. If I love a book or am interested by the ideas and topics discussed, I’ll often put it down between chapters, sometimes for days, just to consider what might happen next or how the ending will address a topic.

Reading multiple books at once

Having multiple books on the go at once is also something I rarely do. I like to become immersed in the book I’m reading, and find that more difficult to do if I’m going back and forth between books. I only do this if I’m reading a book I’m struggling with, either because it’s boring but popular or complicated but interesting.

Rarely do I completely stop reading a book, even if it takes forever to get through. There’s only one book on my bookshelf I had to put back without finishing, but I plan to return to it one day… eventually.

My reading goal for 2019

In 2019, I’m setting myself a reading goal (on Goodreads). I’ve never had a reading goal before, but 2019 is also the year I’m going to find more time to do things I love. I’m going to aim to read 50 books! That’s about one book a week, which I think I can do. It should cut down a large portion of my to-be-read pile (as it currently is). I have a lot of other goals for 2019 (when usually I set none!), but this is probably the most achievable. I love to read, and all I have to do to achieve my goal is read! How hard can it be?

Do you have a reading goal for 2019? Are you a fast or slow reader? A one book at a time or many reader?

Let’s see if I reach my goal.
